While I continue to compile the ever-growing network(s) mail-out which makes me feel like Sisyphus (by the way, if you don’t think you receive those wonders of wit, wisdom and waffle, drop me a line), here’s news of a couple of things we’ve been involved with at LP. Oh, and watch this space for news of a Newcastle Mental Health day, most probably in August…
Our trial of a playwriting/reading group was a great success, so the date for the next one’s been set:June 13th.
Monday Playwriting Group
2-4pm, June 13th at Launchpad, Holy Jesus Hospital
A group for mental health service users to explore how words get turned into theatrical productions, and writing for performance.
The playwriting group is set up with two aims; to provide an introduction to and forum to discuss playwriting; to provide a play reading group aimed at writers.
The practical writing aspect of the sessions will involve writing exercises and discussion of approaches to playwriting. The reading element will involve reading extracts of plays as a group (by no means will it be compulsory to read aloud) that support the practical part of the session and provide stimulus for discussion on style and technique in the work of different writers we choose to look at.
The next session will be on June 13th and will focus on character in playwriting.
Later sessions will look at sub-text, exposition, story structure, rewriting and spontaneity.
There is no preparation, prior knowledge or experience of theatre or playwriting required for any of the sessions.
The sessions will not be every Monday, but we will send out information as and when later dates are decided.
And our mate Anthony Morgan is trialling something new, and very interesting, for Byker (flyer attached). I guess you’d call it a type of community psychology, and if it goes well, could be replicated in other areas, which we’d assist with.
Exploring Our Lives
A community discussion group about society, mental health and life in general
Why are we so afraid of mental illness?
What helps us feel safe and secure?
In what ways is our environment psychologically toxic?
How healthy is it to be well adapted to a sick society?
We will use materials including extracts from books, newspapers or documentaries as well as presentations and talks by people in the mental health field to stimulate ideas and group discussion.
Who Can Come? This group is open to everyone and no previous knowledge of mental health or psychology is expected. It is limited to 12 people and priority will be given to those who can attend every session.
Where and When? The group will run on a weekly basis on Mondays from 6th June until 11th July (6 sessions). We will meet from 7pm to 9pm at Charles Street Community Centre, Algernon Road, NE6 2UN (in Heaton/Byker area)
Cost? The total cost is £6 (£1 per session) to cover electricity and other expenses. It is free to anyone on Benefits.
