Depressing, but realistic. What future for mental health social work?

Well.  The thing the social workers have feared, have had hanging over our heads for months now, has come to pass.  Now all the social workers in the city are to be removed from frontline mental health teams and relocated into new teams.  We have been told that we will still be able to use our “frontline mental health assessment skills” if we are located to the duty team, and using our skills we will be able to say “ooh mental health? Let me give you a number for the mental health team” which is about the limit of how our skills will be used now.  Or we will be placed into community teams to assess for care packages for “people with mental health problems” – oh and we’re an “ageless service” now so this will include people with dementia.  So really doing care plans for people with dementia. …
